Solway Sociable Cycling Club History.
1970 The Solway Cycling Club to join an amalgamation of clubs to form a sustainable cycling club: - Velo Club Cumbria.
1996 January – the Solway to reform as Solway Sociable Cycling Club Founder members –Secretary/Treasurer Steve Hasson, Chairman Maurice Cowley and member Brian “Bacca” Moore
February – Membership confirmed to R.T.T.C. Solway membership fee £2:40.
The club has a magazine ‘Solway Chat’ 1st copy produced on computer for duplication
by Maurice Cowley, collation of information and reporter Steve Hasson.
The club has strong social contacts with VC Cumbria, The Tricycle Association – North East (Houghton CC and Lincoln Wheelers), North West (Barrow Central Wheelers). Also the Tandem Club and later Eden Valley CTC group.
Club Members riding time trials from 10 miles up to 12-hour events, using solo bike, trike, and tandem bike and tandem trike.
Club Programme Activities:- Very strong social network with club runs every week, inter club events, hostel weekends, annual one and two week tours.

2011. January. A very sad start to the year, two of our stalwart cyclist passed away in January. Irene Lunt, very popular and determined lifelong athlete, runner and cyclist. She overcame a long period of illness, with most recently, a tough 700 mile tour in 2009 on a circuit of Scotland, this sweeping up the Western isles and looping round Northern Scotland before heading south for the border.
Jimmy Thorburn, our second member, from a particularly tough generation of Tricyclist, a lifelong member of the Maryport C C and The Tricyclist Association, latterly he was a member of the Solway S C C. Jimmy preceded his wife Evelyn, our third member who also sadly passed away in 2011, she was a member of all three clubs alongside Jimmy.
Evelyn and Jimmy where very well known throughout the country. They were very much appreciated by two and three wheel cyclist.
Among many of their activities the sight of their three wheel tea wagon brought cheer to the masses, they appeared at various and varied functions in their three wheeler Del boy transport` with awning, It was always in demand. They are all missed with feeling.

October-The Club Dinner, organiser Sue Murphy. Awards, Roy Jackson, John Murphy and Maurice Cowley Club touring Competition winners, Sue Murphy to win the ladies section. The Downhill event winners David Swift and Tracy Moore, Steve Hasson winning the Pica Cup. With a 105% vote John Murphy won the wooden spoon.
Our N/E member Noel Knox received a special award an “It’s your round effigy” in a tasteful presentation case.

2012. January. Maurice Cowley, Steve Hasson, Bacca and Tracy Moore attended Easingwold for the Tricycle Association North East Region Annual Lunch, Bacca collect a Handicap award for his trike ride in the Mike Dixie Memorial 10 mile. John Coulson retired secretary of the NETTA was presented with a token of appreciation for all his hard work over 20 plus years’ service. Solway/Houghton CC members present Noel Knox, Ian Murray, Dave Turner, Harry Brown and Vic Austin.
March - April and May. The end of an era and the end of Steve Hasson’s early season Club Reliability Rides, now reclassified – Chairman’s’ early season rides.
March -Free lunch do invite – At the Old Posting House, Deanscales, organised by Steve Hasson to mark his 75th Birthday.
April – Bacca Moore riding in a Garstang trike open 10 mile time trial clocking a 30 minute ride.
May - A B&B weekend in a Northumberland was organised by Paul Cumella with Sue Cumella, John & Sue Murphy, Anita Goldsworthy, Maggie Grant, John Rowal and Steve Lunt.
June- A 10 day holiday in Belgium, sited at La Cavalier Hotel in Brugge organised by Steve Hasson. Members on holiday included Roy Jackson, Steve Lunt, Anita Goldsworthy, Paul and Sue Cumella, John and Sue Murphy, Dianne Moyes, Bob McWilliams Joe Burrows, Anne Spence. Disappointed Steve and Dave Gould having to cancel.
July- Bacca and Tracy appear at a Sunday lunch on their new £0000.00 American tandem trike recumbent.
August - Bacca clocks his year best time on his trike for 10 mile at 22.25 MPH.
Paul Cumella, Steve Lunt and John Murphy took on a 100K sponsored ride in aid of the Eden Valley Hospice alongside 131 other riders.
A weekend organised by Tracy Moore in Dumfries at The Aston Hotel was organised to celebrate Maurice and Shirley’s Cowley Golden Wedding Anniversary.
September – A weekend in Kielder to visit the new hostel at Demesne farm organised by Roy Jackson with Paul & Sue Cumella, Dianne Moyes, Anne Spencer, Bob Mc Williams, John & Sue Murphy and Anita Goldsworthy.
Bruce Mumford’s held a party at Lodore Falls Hotel to celebrate his 70th birthday..
October. Solway members to Majorca Stewart & Maggie Grant, John & Dianne Moyes, Sue & John Murphy, Steve Lunt, Bruce & Brenda Munford, Anne Spencer, little Andy plus Sue & Paul Cumella. Most of the Solway hired bikes from a Swiss company which they found quiet reliable.
November. Joe and Frances Kendal celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary at the Aston Hotel, Dumfries
2013 April Arnside Hostel Weekend booked by Steve Lunt unfortunately, unable to attend. Paul Cumella organised the routes other riders Maggie & Stuart Grant, Roy Jackson, Rosie, Sue Cumella, Dianne Moyes, Anita Goldsworthy and Anne Spencer.
May. Scottish tour organised John Murphy. Riders travelled by train to Glasgow and the Hostel. Maurice Cowley, John Rowal, Anita Goldsworthy, Dianne Moyes, Maggie & Stewart Grant, Sue Murphy all joining other weekend members at Minnigaff hostel
while Maurice notched up 70 years on the planet: Sue & Paul Cumella organiser of the Minnigaff weekend toured the Machars Peninsular later to join Roy Jackson, Joe & Frances Kendal, Brian & Tracy Moore, Steve Hasson (a non-rider).
On the Sunday Dianne clocked up 67 years.

Club Competitions.
Club B.A.R. On Handicap. (Time Trials).
The club Best All-rounder is based on a rider’s best time on handicap, riding time trials at the distances of 10, 25 and 50 mile. The rider is given a handicap time based on his last 3 year fastest times; if they have no times they will be handicapped using the Vets standard handicap tables. If less than 40 years with no ride times are available they will be handicapped using their first ride at each distance, the second ride at each distance to count. The club B.A.R. is the rider with the fastest total handicap time average M.P.H. over the three distances. Riders with paid up club subscriptions and payment of an competition entry fee to the Solway S C C are eligible for this competition. The riders as a necessity need be cover for ridding time trials under affiliation to the C.T.T. under their second club.
Club Down Hill Competition
The Club Downhill is held annually on the morning of the Club Prize Presentation Dinner. The event is held on the minor road running from a point north of Dean Cross and northwards towards Ullock Village. Starters are held up before release to freewheel (no hacking) downhill to continue freewheeling as far as they can, following the incline until become stationary where they place a marker peg in the verge in line with their chain set. The winner is the nearest to the centre of Ullock. Prizes are awarded for 1st Lady and 1st Gent plus a cup for the furthest from the centre of Ullock. Pay entry fee on the line - £0.50.
Club Tour Competition
The Club Tour Competition is run over a year. Club members taking part score points throughout the year by joining in club activities, also points can be gained on personal cycling throughout the year.
The competition runs from October to October and involves visits to specific sites noted by a 6 figure grid reference. These locations require topping lake land passes, taking in off road sites, tracks and visiting miscellaneous areas in Cumbria. Taking part you will have found many unknown parts of the county.

2012. January. Maurice Cowley, Steve Hasson, Bacca and Tracy Moore attended Easingwold for the Tricycle Association North East Region Annual Lunch, Bacca collect a Handicap award for his trike ride in the Mike Dixie Memorial 10 mile. John Coulson retired secretary of the NETTA was presented with a token of appreciation for all his hard work over 20 plus years’ service. Solway/Houghton CC members present Noel Knox, Ian Murray, Dave Turner, Harry Brown and Vic Austin.
March - April and May. The end of an era and the end of Steve Hasson’s early season Club Reliability Rides, now reclassified – Chairman’s’ early season rides.
March -Free lunch do invite – At the Old Posting House, Deanscales, organised by Steve Hasson to mark his 75th Birthday.
April – Bacca Moore riding in a Garstang trike open 10 mile time trial clocking a 30 minute ride.
May - A B&B weekend in a Northumberland was organised by Paul Cumella with Sue Cumella, John & Sue Murphy, Anita Goldsworthy, Maggie Grant, John Rowal and Steve Lunt.
June- A 10 day holiday in Belgium, sited at La Cavalier Hotel in Brugge organised by Steve Hasson. Members on holiday included Roy Jackson, Steve Lunt, Anita Goldsworthy, Paul and Sue Cumella, John and Sue Murphy, Dianne Moyes, Bob McWilliams Joe Burrows, Anne Spence. Disappointed Steve and Dave Gould having to cancel.
July- Bacca and Tracy appear at a Sunday lunch on their new £0000.00 American tandem trike recumbent.
August - Bacca clocks his year best time on his trike for 10 mile at 22.25 MPH.
Paul Cumella, Steve Lunt and John Murphy took on a 100K sponsored ride in aid of the Eden Valley Hospice alongside 131 other riders.
A weekend organised by Tracy Moore in Dumfries at The Aston Hotel was organised to celebrate Maurice and Shirley’s Cowley Golden Wedding Anniversary.
September – A weekend in Kielder to visit the new hostel at Demesne farm organised by Roy Jackson with Paul & Sue Cumella, Dianne Moyes, Anne Spencer, Bob Mc Williams, John & Sue Murphy and Anita Goldsworthy.
Bruce Mumford’s held a party at Lodore Falls Hotel to celebrate his 70th birthday..
October. Solway members to Majorca Stewart & Maggie Grant, John & Dianne Moyes, Sue & John Murphy, Steve Lunt, Bruce & Brenda Munford, Anne Spencer, little Andy plus Sue & Paul Cumella. Most of the Solway hired bikes from a Swiss company which they found quiet reliable.
November. Joe and Frances Kendal celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary at the Aston Hotel, Dumfries
2013 April Arnside Hostel Weekend booked by Steve Lunt unfortunately, unable to attend. Paul Cumella organised the routes other riders Maggie & Stuart Grant, Roy Jackson, Rosie, Sue Cumella, Dianne Moyes, Anita Goldsworthy and Anne Spencer.
May. Scottish tour organised John Murphy. Riders travelled by train to Glasgow and the Hostel. Maurice Cowley, John Rowal, Anita Goldsworthy, Dianne Moyes, Maggie & Stewart Grant, Sue Murphy all joining other weekend members at Minnigaff hostel
while Maurice notched up 70 years on the planet: Sue & Paul Cumella organiser of the Minnigaff weekend toured the Machars Peninsular later to join Roy Jackson, Joe & Frances Kendal, Brian & Tracy Moore, Steve Hasson (a non-rider).
On the Sunday Dianne clocked up 67 years.

October The club joins in on the Inaugural ride on the opening of the New Cycle Track from Allonby to Maryport.

Club Competitions.
Club B.A.R. On Handicap. (Time Trials).
The club Best All-rounder is based on a rider’s best time on handicap, riding time trials at the distances of 10, 25 and 50 mile. The rider is given a handicap time based on his last 3 year fastest times; if they have no times they will be handicapped using the Vets standard handicap tables. If less than 40 years with no ride times are available they will be handicapped using their first ride at each distance, the second ride at each distance to count. The club B.A.R. is the rider with the fastest total handicap time average M.P.H. over the three distances. Riders with paid up club subscriptions and payment of an competition entry fee to the Solway S C C are eligible for this competition. The riders as a necessity need be cover for ridding time trials under affiliation to the C.T.T. under their second club.
Club Down Hill Competition
The Club Downhill is held annually on the morning of the Club Prize Presentation Dinner. The event is held on the minor road running from a point north of Dean Cross and northwards towards Ullock Village. Starters are held up before release to freewheel (no hacking) downhill to continue freewheeling as far as they can, following the incline until become stationary where they place a marker peg in the verge in line with their chain set. The winner is the nearest to the centre of Ullock. Prizes are awarded for 1st Lady and 1st Gent plus a cup for the furthest from the centre of Ullock. Pay entry fee on the line - £0.50.
Club Tour Competition
The Club Tour Competition is run over a year. Club members taking part score points throughout the year by joining in club activities, also points can be gained on personal cycling throughout the year.
The competition runs from October to October and involves visits to specific sites noted by a 6 figure grid reference. These locations require topping lake land passes, taking in off road sites, tracks and visiting miscellaneous areas in Cumbria. Taking part you will have found many unknown parts of the county.
