Another cycling day lost due to the weather, although Dianne, John, Maggie, Stewart and Roy made it to the Brewers Fayer
for a chat
Sunday 27th January Kirkstile Inn Loweswater.
On a cold windy morning Sue, John and Roy left Braithwaite heading for Loweswater.
With the Murphy's on their electric bikes they placed Roy in the middle to try and protect him from the strong northerly wind.
On reaching the Pheasant Hotel at Dubwath John feeling the cold stopped to put on an extra layer inside his gloves the temperature on John's Garmin said 1.3 degrees.
Just after crossing the A66 this slim looking athlete appeared in the opposite direction it turned out to be Maggie doing a loop back to Wythop Mill.
With Sue doing all the work on the front it was on through Embleton to Lambfoot where they crossed the A66 again.
After the climb passed the big house it was onto Hundith crossroads where they turned left to Lorton.
Having battled with the wind it was now a following wind into Lorton, much relief for Roy who must have been struggling at times.
From Lorton they decided to take the back road via Thackthwaite although the better option would have been straight down the valley.
On arrival at the Inn Dianne's bike was already tied up, having ridden from home with a following wind she said.
Joining the two wheel group for lunch was Maggie, Stewart, Janet, Ivan, Tom, Sue and Paul all having arrived by car.
After a good lunch it was back out into the cold for some, while the rest climbed into their cars and on with the heating.

With everyone ready Maurice led the group away from the Melbreak heading for Workington to pick up the cycle track to Maryport.

With the rain having cleared Roy, Sue, and the two John's left Braithwaite heading for the A66 once on the A66 they continued to High Briary.
Turning onto the old road they continued on towards Burns where they turned right to Shundraw to join the Vale road to Thirlmere.
After crossing the A591 they continued to the dam only to find it fenced off to all comers. Below the dam construction work was in progress on the West Cumbria pipe line.
After a brief stop it was back down the Vale to Threlkeld for lunch at the Horse and Farrier to find Maurice.
Maurice who had an appointment in Keswick parked his car at the pub and went point hunting.
Leaving Threlkeld he cycled down the Vale to the dam, finding the road closed he retraced his tyre tracks back to the A591.
It was then along A591 for the climb up the Nest, turning left on the descent to Rakefoot.
Having secured a point it was off to the Stone Circle and Goosewell Farm for more points before making his way back to Threlkeld.
The pub used to do a pensioners lunch that was quite reasonable priced but not anymore, all agreed that would be the last time they would use the venue.
After a good old natter they made a move Maurice heading for home in his car, while the two wheelers headed back down the Vale.
They decided to avoid Burns Brow for Shundraw and collect a couple points on the way, before making their way through Keswick back to Braithwaite.
Sunday 13th January Post House Deanscales
On a very windy morning and with the rain having stopped Sue, John and Roy all togged up in wet weather gear set of from Braithwaite.

They were Maurice, Tom, Maggie, Dianne, John, Sue, Paul, John R, Adam, Sue and John.
After a good old natter the two wheel group decided it was time to make a move or they would still be there at lunch time.
With the temperature at one degree Sue, Tom, Adam, and the two John's headed for the Greenway, leaving Maurice to walk the dogs.
Maggie having cycled from home decided to do a spot of shopping in Cockermouth before returning home, while Sue and Paul headed home.

Sunday 6th January Wheatsheaf Lorton
On the first Sunday in 2019 thirteen members made it for lunch they were, Brian, Tracy, Maurice, Dianne, Maggie, Stewart, Tom, Roy, Sue, John, Ivan, Janet and Dave.
Maurice and Tom having parked their cars at the Wheatsheaf jumped on their bikes and rode to Buttermere via Hopebeck. As they reached the corner to drop down to the main road a car came up behind them and blew his horn at them all the way down and when reaching the main road he blew his horn again at a marshal who was there for the half marathon being undertaken by 450 runners. However when pulling out from the junction he stalled the car which amused Tom and Maurice and the marshal. The pair carried on over Langthwaite Green and as they dropped down to Crummock Water they noticed a “piece of wood” and Maurice (who didn't want to stop when he was going downhill) decided if it was still there on the return he would remove it. At Buttermere Village coffees were imbibed by both at the cafe.
Thirst quenched they then cycled back to the Wheatsheaf to find Brian and Tracy arriving in their car while they were packing their bikes away.
Maurice did stop to remove the obstruction in the road but it wasn't a piece of wood but a metre long metal bar covered in cow muck which must have dropped of a tractor's trailer which was muck spreading.
Dianne found her own way to the pub taking in the vista round Rodgerscale looking out over the fields, spotting Willows trees being grown for Iggesund biomass plant at Workington.
Meanwhile Maggie and Stewart were making their way from Trough Bridge, while the Braithwaite trio were making their way along the A66 in drizzling conditions.
The Braithwaite trio on reaching the outskirts of Cockermouth met Janet riding out to meet them, a couple of minutes later and she would have missed them.
It was then onto the Greenway to join the Lorton road turning right at Hundith crossroads to Southwaite Mill, Rodgerscale and onto Lorton for lunch.
Not long after settling down for lunch Ivan and Dave arrived both by motor vehicle.
After a good lunch and natter member started to leave, the two wheel group leaving together heading for Hundith crossroads there they turned right towards Embleton.
At Strawberry How junction Dianne said goodbye while the rest continued to Lambfoot saying goodbye to Janet.
At the Wheatsheaf Maggie and Stewart parted company leaving the Braithwaite trio to make their way back to Braithwaite.
Autumn Tints Wednesday 2nd January Brewers Fayre by Dianne Moyes
It was a sunny but frosty morning as we met up at a busy Brewer’s Fayre in Cockermouth. Maurice was dressed for dog walking, John Moyes was being sociable and the rest were ready to get in the first miles of 2019. John M, Sue, Janet, Dianne, John R, Roy and Tom were the riders who after plenty of coffee and chat set off into Cockermouth. Because it was still icy we decided to just cycle out to Dubwath on the Embleton road which we knew would have been gritted. The road was generally dry except for a few places where running water at the edge had frozen. We turned left to pass the Sailing Club and round to Ouse Bridge where we decided enough was enough, it was too cold. So we continued past the Distillery to the Embleton road and into Cockermouth via St Helens Street, to Brewer’s Fayre again, only 14 miles. We made the most of the two meals for £8.99 offer and enjoyed a good lunch with lots of amusing conversation as usual.
