Autumn Tints Wednesday 14th June Maurice's (I want to be alone) Ride by Maurice Cowley
Due to most of the Autumn Tints still being in Shropshire Maurice really had to ride alone. Not that it bothered him!!!!!
Maurice parked his car across the road from the Castle Inn and due to the weather being rather warm, for the first time this year Maurice was able to strip off his “longs” and ride in shorts. What a relief.
In keeping with the Autumn Tints start times his 10am start was 10:20am.
He started on his ride by turning left to climb up and over the Castle Inn/Ireby road to turn left and once more uphill to High Ireby and then drop down to Ireby. Half way through the village a right turn to go up the road leading to the B5299 and part way up turned left to go still uphill to visit Aughertree and then did a “U” turn to return downhill to go back uphill to the road leading to the B5299. On reaching the “T” junction he turned right towards Calbeck Common but stopped for something to eat at the cattle grid leading down to the Common. While eating his sandwiches he watched a Buzzard soaring above and Swallows and Swifts darting about looking for their lunch of flies.
After lunch he dropped down to Calbeck Common then carried on up to turn down to Longlands and over the hill to take to the road leading to the backside of Over Water to pass by the entrance to Over Water Hall. While riding up this quiet road he spotted two stoats playing in the side of the road but they soon disappeared as he rode closer. On reaching the “T” junction with the Castle Inn/Ireby road he turned down to reach his car at Castle Inn and drove home.
