Autumn Tints Wednesday 29th May Brewers Fayre.
What appeared might be a damp morning turned out to be dry until late in the afternoon, although not short of a westerly wind.
Making their way to the Brewers Fayre were Tom, Maggie, Stewart, Sue, John, Anita, Ivan and Roy.
With coffee flowing and the usual chat about everything, the group were in no hurry to get going, although a text from Dianne in France got everybody's attention.
With time going on and no suggestion on where to have lunch it was decided to come back to the Brewers Fayre (bye one get the other free).
Route decided it was across the A66 into Cockermouth taking the usual route down through Parklands.
Having put Roy on the front, instead of turning right into Parklands he continued on to the A66 only to disappear through the hedge ignoring all the shouting from behind.
Ivan having gone to tell him, it was not long before they were back in the group as they crossed the A66 onto the old road into Brigham.
From Brigham it was onto Bridgefoot for the first serious climb of the day up Chapel Brow to join the cycle way to Lillyhall.
Now into the wind it was along the undulating road to Branthwaite followed by a tail wind as they made their way to Dean and Deanscales.
Finally after passing through Eaglesfield they joined the busy A5086 this was not without incident.
A tractor and trailer stuck behind decided to overtake when the road was clear only to turn left in front of the lead rider up the lane to Moorland Close.
This brought the group to a complete stop with some showing their frustration at the driver who disappeared down the lane.
Finally they arrived back at the Brewers Fayre all in one piece to load bikes, before going for lunch having done 16 miles.
Sunday 26th May Waverley Hotel, Whitehaven
Nine members attended the Waverley Hotel for lunch on Sunday, they were Steve L and daughter Angela, Mavis and John, Roy, Big Tom, Dave S, Steve H and Maurice.
Only 1 rider rode his bike, Roy. He parked his car at the Waverley and rode north up the cycle route, just passed Lowca then returned to Whitehaven to ride to the Beacon Museum and then back to the Waverley to meet up with the rest for lunch.
Dave S walked from his home in Whitehaven to the Waverley and back – and Maurice and Steve H walked from Steve's house as well. Big Tom had had a walk along the coastal path round to Barrow and then to the Waverley.
The rest arrived by car and returned the same way.
Autumn Tints Wednesday 22nd May Woodlands Tea Room Santon Bridge
On a glorious sunny morning with a north westerly wind nine members made their way to Seascale, they were John R, Anita, Tom, Maggie, Stewart, Roy, Janet, Sue and John.
With bikes unloaded the group moved out of the car with John R on the front leading them through the narrow railway arch.
After passing under the arch the road climbed steadily before reaching the new Seascale to Gosforth cycle path.
On reaching and crossing busy A595 it was on through Gosforth to Wellington for the climb up Leagate Brow.
Regrouping at the top was followed by a two mile descent, before the road started to climb again to Harrow Head.
A brief stop to regroup and take in the views before setting off again on a fast downhill section pass Greendale to Wast Water.
It was then along the narrow twisting undulating road to Wasdale Head where the road runs out and the valley continues.
Having had the assistance of a following wind it was now into the wind as they followed their wheel tracks back along the lake side.
Leaving Wast Water behind they made their way towards Nether Wasdale, this was followed by more climbing before the steep descent into Santon Bridge.
Out of the wind and with the sun beating down the group chose to sit outside for lunch in what was a sun trap.
Soaking up the sun and oblivious of the time until someone said they had to be home by a certain time got the group moving.
Leaving the Woodlands Tea Room after a good lunch and with John R on the front they headed past Irton Hall to eventually join the A595 at Holmrook.
Turning left of the main road they made their way through Drigg up the final drag of the day back to Seascale for a welcome ice cream.
Sunday 19th May Kings Arms Bowness on Solway
After Wednesday's hilly ride it was almost a flat ride from Allonby to Bowness on Solway.
With members arriving on four wheels and after unloading bikes it was straight across the road into the cafe for usual tea and coffee.
With a 25 mile ride in front of them Maurice got the troops to attention for the start out of Allonby.
With John and Maurice ridding on the front and with a following wind the group made good progress through the lanes to Abbeytown.
A brief stop in Abbeytown for some to cast clothing as the day got warmer, only to wish they hadn't when they turned into the wind going round Anthorn.
Having rounded Anthorn it was back with the tail wind for last few miles to the lunch stop at the Kings Arms to find Tracy and Brian.
Sue having booked a table saw thirteen members sat down for an excellent meal served in the newly revamped bar area.
Eventually after a good old natter the group sorted themselves out for the ride back to Allonby, leaving Tracy and Brian to their four wheels.
Having had a following wind most of the way out it was straight into the wind with Dianne doing most of the work on the front on her e-bike.
With the group having split around Newton Arlosh they regrouped in Abbeytown, only to see Maurice disappear down the road suffering from pain in his knee.
Back in the saddle and with Dianne still on the front they made their way to Westnewton for the final few miles to Allonby and parked vehicles.
Those out for the ride were, Dianne, Maggie, Janet, Anita, Sue, Maurice, Tom, Roy, Ivan and the two John's. (Miles 45).
Autumn Tints Wednesday 15th May Mae's Tea Room Uldale.
With the continuing good weather twelve members made it to the start line, they were
Maurice, Dianne, Tom, Anita, Maggie, Stewart, Roy, Janet, Ivan, Sue, John and John R.
With a hilly ride in prospect and with tour points on offer Maurice was keen to get going, while some were still refilling there mugs with coffee.
Eventually the group made a move out the car park, only to be split on exiting the car park by the volume of traffic.
More hold up at the traffic lights for the back group, never to see the front group again that consisted of Maurice, Tom, Roy and Anita, until the junction with the Ireby road.
They had taken a route just before the steep climb at Fell End to High Bewaldeth, for Maurice and Roy to add to their points tally.
The back group after the long hold up made their way onto the greenway to join the Isel road, stopping on Isel Bridge looking for Sand Martins and the odd fish in the river.
Turning right over the bridge they continued on uphill to join the more undulating section, before crossing the A591 into Bewaldeth.
More climbing before reaching the junction where they spotted the Maurice group passing the junction, this was followed by the fast descent to Ruthwaite.
Turning left at Ruthwaite was followed by more climbing to High Ireby to see the two groups merge, before the descent into Ireby.
Finally after the drag from Ireby the group arrived at Mae's Tea Room for lunch, some opting to sit outside soaking up the sun.
Lunch over it was back in the saddle for more leg aching climbs before reaching the welcome downhill run towards the Castle Inn.
Half way down they turned left to Robin Hood and down the hill into Bassenthwaite, from there it was onto the Castle Inn.
From the Castle Inn it was the usual route back to the Brewers Fayre via Embleton, Slate Fell and the Greenway.
Sunday 12th May Wheatsheaf Lorton
On a cool dry sunny day ten members made it to the Wheatsheaf for lunch, but not before doing their own thing, with the Fred Whitton cycle sportive winding its way through Lorton it was on some member’s agenda.
Maurice more concerned about collection tour points with three tracks in mind. He parked his car at the Weatsheaf and started off by heading towards Cockermouth but turned up to climb up passing Armaside then another climb for High Side and then a short walk to the top of the track and then rode down to Wythop. After this track he started on the track from Wythop Mill to Beck Wythop. Again it was a climb and when he reach the gate where the forest started he found a “No entry Forestry Work in Progress” but as it was Sunday no work was in progress so he climbed over the gate and staggered down the track which had been churned up by Caterpillar tractors until he arrived at the track down to Beck Wythop. After a short ride and turning a corner he found the track blocked by a windblown tree. He was able to crawl under this obstruction. He then encountered another tree down being unable to crawl under this on he climbed down around it through the undergrowth encountering more trees down. This was the case for about ¼ mile all the time stumbling and being scratched by the undergrowth. After ¾ hour and finally reaching the clear path he met Roy who was going to try going up the track from the other direction from Beck Wythop. Together they descended to the A66. Maurice by then had had enough of the tracks and decided not to go to climb the Setmurthy Track and with Roy went straight on to the dinner stop to meet up with the rest of the club riders.
Dianne left home to make her way to Paddle School then onto Rodgerscales and Lorton where she joined the sportive riders. Now mixed in with the Fred Whitton riders, she got the odd cheer from roadside spectators as she made her way to the Kirkstile. After coffee at the Kirkstile she headed back down the valley to Lorton for lunch.
Brian cycled from home on his trike via the cycle way to Rowrah, then on through Lamplugh to Loweswater and onto Lorton.
Tracy parked the van at Hundith, and then cycled out to the foot of Whinlatter to watch the sportive rider's.
Sue and John having got overtaken by the excitement in Braithwaite with the amount of spectators watching the sportive forgot about the time. Leaving Braithwaite about twelve fifteen they opted for their e-bikes for the ride over Whinlatter.
On arrival at the Wheatsheaf, included those mentioned were Steve and his daughter Angela and Dave, Dave having cycled from home.
With most of them having had lunch by the time Sue and John got there Maurice, Tracy and Brian were ready to leave.
While the rest continued chatting mostly about electric bike, Angela keen to see Steve on one, was busy trolling the Internet.
Eventually after a long discussion on different e-bikes the remaining members left in different directions back home.
Sue and John eager to test their new e-bike headed off to Buttermere to ride over Newlands Pass back to Braithwaite.
Autumn Tints Wednesday 8th May Aquarium Maryport
On a cold wet morning ten members made it for tea and coffee at the Brewers Fayre they were Maurice, Dianne, John M, Sue, John, Janet, Ivan, Roy, John R and Paul.
With the ride down for Allonby it was decided to make it to Maryport and then decide wether to go the extra distance due to the weather.
After a long chat and lots of liquid consumed the group made a move leaving Paul and John Moyes who were just there for the chat.
Dianne took the lead position out of Cockermouth and onto Brigham, where they crossed the busy A66 for the third time to Great Broughton.
The first climb of the day saw Roy drop his chain as they made their way up the hill into Great Broughton, this was followed by more climbing before reaching Camerton.
With rain having stopped and with a following wind they negotiated the final climb out of Camerton to join the cycle way to Maryport.
On arrival at the Aquarium they found Sue and Paul who had driven over to join the two wheel group for lunch.
Eager to get away (I want to be alone) Maurice left the rest chatting heading for Flimby and Broughton Moor and back to the Brewers Fayre.
The rest after saying goodbye to Sue and Paul followed Maurice's wheel tracks back to the Brewers Fayre and parked cars.
What had been a cold day with a northeasterly wind, and with the occasional drop of rain, saw the group cycle back on familiar roads that had not been used for some time.
Sunday 5th May Ennerdale Brewery Rowrah.
Roll on summer, another cold uninviting morning as Sue and John left Braithwaite on their e-bikes to meet Dianne in Lorton.
Making good use of the power on their bikes they soon reached the summit of Whinlatter only to feel the cold on the descent.
On reaching Lorton they found Dianne waiting patiently, after brief stop they resumed heading for Thackthwaite.
With still a cold wind that seemed to change directions on every turn they made their way past Loweswater for the ascent of Fangs Brow.
On reaching Lamplugh Sue and John decided to carry onto Felldyke, turning right at Cross Rigg to Kirkland.
Dianne carried on to the main road, turning left after a short distance to Kirkland where she turned right taking her back to the main road to Rowrah.
Meanwhile Sue and John followed Dianne's wheel tracks from Kirkland to the Ennerdale Brewery for Lunch.
Round the table for lunch were Maurice and Anita both out on their bikes plus Dave, Sue, Paul, Steve along with his daughter Angela.

From Dean it was onto Deanscales, Eaglesfield saying goodbye to Dianne at Paddle School leaving the Braithwaite duo to carry onto Braithwaite via the A66.
Autumn Tints Wednesday 1st May Pot Place Plumpton.
On a wet morning seven members made their way to Greystoke but not before being diverted due to road works between Motherby and Greystoke.
With the rain still falling bikes were unloaded from vehicles, with Dianne wondering where one could get a coffee before setting off.
It didn't take long for Dianne and Anita to find that the Boot and Shoe, although they were not open made the group welcome.
Out of the rain it was tea all round and with a tin of biscuits placed on the table one forgot the rain outside, round the table including the later, were Sue, Tom, Roy, and the two John's.
With the rain having eased off the group set of following the sea to sea route to Blencow, after passing through Blencow it was onto Unthank to join the B5305
After turning right at the junction it was just a short distance before turning left towards Hutton End.
A brief stop at Hutton End to discuss where to go next, John suggested they carried on towards Carlisle and part way turn right to Southwaite.
With all in favour they set of again, with the rain coming and going they eventually reached the turn, this was followed by the first climb of the day.
Once over the top it was mostly downhill to join the long straight road to Calthwaite that runs parallel with M6.
From Calthwaite still following the M6 on their left, they made their way to Plumpton for lunch at the Pot Place.
Out of the cold and into the warm surroundings of what had been an old wooden school building from Abbeytown, for a variety of options from the menu.
After a long spell in the classroom it was time to leave with John knowing the route back to Greystoke.
Leaving the Pot Place the group again followed the M6 to Catterlen then onto Newton Reigny to follow Sustrans route seven to Laithes.
From Laithes still following route seven to the crossroads, where they joined route seventy one, taking them through Blencow back to Greystoke.
What appeared might be a damp morning turned out to be dry until late in the afternoon, although not short of a westerly wind.
