Sunday 28th May Waverley Hotel, Whitehaven by Maurice Cowley/Steve Lunt
14 members were at lunch at the Waverley Hotel, Whitehaven. They were Steve L, Roy, Dave Swift, Dianne, Peter and Michelle, Steve H, Maurice, Bacca and Tracy, Maggie and Stewart, Paul and Sue.
This day was not a club run so members came to Whitehaven from every direction to meet up at the Waverley.
Dianne, Peter and Michelle, Bacca and Tracy all arrive by car and went home the same way.
Steve L and Roy decided on a “meet and greet” ride – Steve L from home on his bike at 10am out on cycle way via Whitehaven “Hub” and route 52 north towards Distington to meet Roy who had cycled southwards on the same cycle route from his car left at the Melbreak Hotel, Chapel Brow. They met at Lowca and they both cycled towards Whitehaven. With time to spare they passed by Whitehaven town and onto Moor Row leaving cycle way and up towards Keekle but prior to Galemire Vets they entered the back way into Westlakes Science Park (a new adventure for Roy!!) and down into Whitehaven and so to lunch at the Waverley.
After lunch with all going different ways Dave Swift (who had cycled to the Waverley from his home in Whitehaven for lunch) joined Roy and Steve L to ride northwards towards Lillyhall and at Hunday Manor (the top of the brow of the hill) said cheerio to Roy and turned to pass the Rescue Station and downhill towards the Golf Course. A lovely view of the coastline ahead. All seemed straight forward until disaster struck when Dave S hit a deep pothole with both wheels on the A596 main road into Workington and incurred puncture blow outs in both wheels. Trouble!! Managing to sort of patch up one inner tube for the front wheel and replace a new inner tube in the back wheel before struggling on towards Distington – the shortest escape route home. Dave S's front wheel tube finally gave just short of The Pelican Garage at Whitehaven where Dave S waited for Steve L to ride home to collect his car and rescue himself and bike. The “positive” aspect of the incident – lovely warm weather, light and lots of time.
Maurice rode from home via Beckermet to Braystones and onto Nethertown.
Here he visited the shore where he hadn't been for quite a while to find that quite a few of the bungalows were now missing. He hadn't realized that it had been that long!!
Onwards to St. Bees then the climb up and over to Rottington and Sandwith to arrive at Kells and the track which brought him down behind the Beacon Museum and finally to Steve H's flat to walk with him to the Waverey to join the rest of the assembled members for lunch.
Paul and Sue arrived at the Waverley for lunch with the others by riding to Workington and using the cycle way from there to Whitehaven and returned home more or less the same way.
Autumn Tints Wednesday 24th May Pudding Lane Cafe, Seascale by Maurice Cowley
4 riders arrived at John Rowels house at Whitehaven to go on the ride to Seascale, they were Maggie, Steve L, Roy, and John R himself. They were going to collect Maurice on the way through Egremont where he would be waiting in the cafe drinking coffee. The weather was still a little bit cold but the wind had dropped as the quartet left Whitehaven by dropping down onto the cycle track to ride up to Moor row where they left it to ride on the road to Woodend. They then dropped down to the Egremont cycle track and into Egremont to pick up Maurice. On leaving Egremont, at Gulley Flatts, they took to the Ulldale View road passing Catgill Hall Farm and the old Summer House ruins and Rothersyke House and also dropped down to pass Kersey Bridge to carry on to Braystones. Next village to pass through was Beckermet where they were able to get onto the Beckermet/Sellafield Cycle Track passing Moorside on the way to Sellafield. This cycle track also took then around Sellafield to cross the River Calder to get on the track to Seascale (locally known as the Cinder Track) which took them into Seascale and the Pudding Lane Cafe for lunch. After lunch Maggie was reluctant to return by the “Cinder Track” so Maurice suggested to go back via Calder Lonning (which would keep them off the main road (A595)) and they were all in favour.
The route led alongside the Golf course and down a track which came out on the road leading to Calder Gate at Sellafield. Prior to reaching Calder Gate the group turned off the road to go down Calder Lonning passing Seascale Hall and Calder Hall (but outside the security fence) and Church House Farm to arrive at the A595. Traveling about 1 mile, through Calderbridge, to turn down Nursery Road through Beckermet and up Morass Road to emerge onto B5345 where Maurice said goodbye to the group at the cycle track leading to Thornhill and home. The rest carried on over Kersey Bridge to turn back to Gulley Flatts and Egremont to return to Whitehaven via the Cycle Track from Moor Row to Whitehaven and John R's house to collect their cars and return home.
Sunday 21st May Club Run Allonby to Bowness on Solway by Steve Lunt
Sudden shock to the system – persistent rain all the way from home to Allonby and there in the Coffee Shop – Moe, Steve L, Paul and Sue, Maggie, John R, Anita and Dianne drinking tea and coffee hoping that the rain might stop and so it did about an hour later. They decided, as a group, to drive to on to Abbeytown and park up on the B5307 on Abbey Road to start the ride.
The route took them along on the B5307 through Newton Arlosh to Kirkbride, crossing the causeway using Whitrigg Bridge over the River Wampool turning left at the “T” junction to Whitrigg and on to Anthorn.
Unfortunately, without exception, this is where Steve L's cycle computer “goes to sleep” and refuses to record at all until a further 7 or 8 miles further on it “wakes up” and all is back to normal. How inconvenient!!
The road swept northwards here passing Moricombe Bay and on through Cardurnock after which carried on passing Campfield Nature Reserve (where Dianne and Paul and Sue visited briefly) and passing the remains of the old railway viaduct (which used to go across the estuary at Herdhill Scar) and onto The Kings Arms at Bowness on Solway. Here they met up with Brian and Tracy who had been cycling locally.
After lunch they took the shorter route to Whitrigg Bridge passing by Glasson Moss to get to Kirkbride and retrace their route to Newton Arlosh and then taking the Saltcotes Road to reach the B5307 once more at Raby Grange and so into Abbeytown the end of our trip. 26 miles
Autumn Tints Wednesday 17th May by Dianne Moyes
Maurice again out for Touring Competition points parked his car outside John M's house at Braithwaite and rode into Keswick and up to the Burns road. He then turned off and climbed up to the Castle Rigg Stone Circle and then turned right onto the A591 and dropped down towards Keswick but not far from the top took a left and rode up to Rakefoot. He then retraced his route to the top of the “Nest” this time carrying on over to turn left at Dale Bottom to ride and walk up to St. Johns in the Vale Church. After a fast descent he rode down the St. Johns in the Vale with the intention of travelling the back side of Thirmere only to find that the Dam was blocked due to work being carried out and he had had enough of hills for that day which he would have to go up if he wanted to go to the back side. So he passed ½ an hour in the Chalet at the End of the Vale Café before riding back up the “Vale” to the Horse and Farrier at Threlkeld to have dinner with the other riders.
Dianne cycled out from Cockermouth over Whinlatter and then into Keswick for a cuppa at Kat's Kitchen next to KMB before heading up to Castlerigg Stone Circle and down to Threlkeld. Paul and Sue started from Threlkeld and went along St. John's in the Vale to the cafe that got cut off in the 2015 floods and had to have a new bridge. They also found the road closed across the Dam so turned back to Threlkeld. Johnny and Pat also started from Threlkeld but headed east along the C2C and the gated road towards Mungrisedale before turning right across the A66 and taking quiet roads through Guardhouse back to Threlkeld. All six of us met up for lunch. Dianne , Maurice and Johnny then cycled back to Keswick, Dianne heading back via Mirehouse, Castle Inn and the Higham Road. Maurice returned to Braithwaite and Johnny was undecided whether to return home via Whinlatter or Newlands but was determined to get a few hills in. A lovely day out.
Sunday 14th May Wheatsheaf Inn, Embleton By Maurice Cowley
Most of the riders were still sunning themselves in Majorca!! This time 7 members attended the lunch. They were Joe and Frances, Bacca and Tracy, Dianne (home from France), Dave Swift and Maurice (I want to ride alone).
Joe and Frances arrived by car.
Bacca and Tracy had parked up at the Dubwath (at the Pheasant Inn road) and rode to Braithwaite and up to Swinside then down to Portinscale to the Chalet Cafe for a cuppa then returned to their van to get to The Wheatsheaf for lunch. After lunch the departed home on four wheels.
Dave Swift left home late so rode straight to the Wheatsheaf using the A595 and the A66 then the old A66 from Cockermouth to lunch with the group. He refused Maurice's offer of a lift home as he wanted to finished the day off as he had started.
Dianne rode from Cockermouth along the Isel road to Dubwath then climbed up the steep hill to Higham Hall to descend to the Old A66 to reach the Wheatsheaf and lunch with the rest there. After lunch Dianne rode with Dave Swift across the A66 and up to the Hundith Hill and then rode down Strawberry How to reach home in Cockermouth and left Dave to ride to his home in Whitehaven.
Maurice again went point hunting!! Parking his car at the Wheatsheaf he then crossed the A66 to ride up and along the Hundith Hill road to turn down the Armaside to turn left and climb up the road leading to Highside Farm and finally left the track just above Wythop Mill. He then carried on to Dubwath to cross the A66 and rode alongside Bass Lake at the Sailing Club and then to turn right at the Distillery where he found out there was a road race in progress. He then carried on past the junction to Isel Bridge and turned into the woods to climb over Setmurthy Common. When leaving the woods he then proceeded to climb up to turn right to drop down passing the Golf Club to the old A66 and reach the Wheatsheaf for lunch. After a good chat with the group assembled he drove home.
Autumn Tints Wednesday 10th May (No Ride)
Sunday 7th May Kirkstile Inn, Loweswater By Maurice Cowley
Most of the riders were sunning themselves in Majorca so only 6 members attended lunch at the Kirkstile. They were Joe and Frances, John R, Anita, Dave Swift and Maurice (I want to ride alone).
Joe and Frances arrived by car being slightly late as they were held up as they drove down the Lorton Valley with the riders doing the “Fred Whitton Challenge”.
John R and Anita rode together from Whitehaven up the cycle path to Rowrah then through the lanes to the Kirkstile. They rode home more or less the same way
Dave Swift left Whitehaven later and rode on the main Egremont/Cockermaouth road to Lamplugh then down Fangs Brow saying he was held up by a car going down doing about 2mph due to “Fred Whitton Challenge” riders going up. Dave rode home through Thackthwaite, Rogerscale and Paddle School where he turned right to have a cuppa at Brewers Fayre at what used to be the Sheep Centre. He then rode down to the A66 and turned up to Low Brigham and then up Chapel Brow and up the A595 to return home to Whitehaven.
Maurice went point hunting!! Parking his car at the Kirkstile he then rode over Mosser Fell and passed Mosser Church as he rode along the Sosgill road to Mockerkin and over and down Fangs Brow to be greeted by marshalls and riders doing the “Fred Whitton Challenge” coming up faster than he was going down. He then turned down Thackthwaite to cross the Lorton Valley road at Low Lorton where a mass of people were applauding the “Challenge” riders. Maurice thanked them for their encouragement of his efforts, which brought a laugh from them. He carried on through to Hopebeck to drop down again to the Lorton Valley road to finally reach the Kirkstile and lunch. After lunch he returned home by car.
Autumn Tints Wednesday 3rd May Craggs Bothel.
On windy sunny morning eleven members turned up at Brewers Fayre, they were Sue, John, Roy, Maurice, Stewart, Sue, Paul, Tom, Janet, Ivan and John R.
After the welcome beverage Maurice called the troops to order, only to find Tom was having problems with his electric bike.
It appeared a loose cable was the cause of the problem, giving him no power to the motor that ended his day on the bike.
Eventually the group left with John on the front heading for the A66 to join the short cycle path onto the old road to Brigham.
Sue and Paul not out for the ride, left the group taking the road to High Brigham, having just got back from a cycling holiday in Lincolnshire.
Crossing the A66 and the River it was up the hill past Broughton Craggs to Tallentire, stopping by Bridekirk school, where Sue and John turned right to Bridekirk.
The rest continued onto Tallentire, while Sue and John were heading up Tallentire Hill to collect tour points.
From the top the view across the Solway was magnificent, not unspoilt by the wind farm nearby, with the blades humming in the strong north easterly wind.
Sue and John now on their own followed the wheel tracks of the rest, passing through Gilcrux, Plumbland and Bothel to the Craggs.
After lunch members departed in different directions, Maurice heading towards Castle Inn, to collect tour points.
Janet and Ivan followed Maurice, although much later, for a less bumpy ride back to Cockermouth.
While the rest decided to go via Sunderland and Isel Bridge, with the help of a following wind.
A brief stop on the bridge was followed by the short climb to join the road to Cockermouth, only for Roy to have the misfortune to puncture.
Back in the saddle it was onto Cockermouth to pick up the Greenway back to parked cars at the Brewers Fayre.
14 members were at lunch at the Waverley Hotel, Whitehaven. They were Steve L, Roy, Dave Swift, Dianne, Peter and Michelle, Steve H, Maurice, Bacca and Tracy, Maggie and Stewart, Paul and Sue.
