Wednesday October 30th Allonby Cafe. by Dianne Moyes
Weather: cool, but sunny and still with good visibility.
Eight of us met up at the Melbreak, near Chapel Brow. Dianne, Stuart Pike, Janet and Ivan all rode out from Cockermouth with Maurice, Tom, John Rowell, and Roy arriving by car. After the usual drinks we set off towards Workington, keeping together well until Curwen Park where Maurice on gate duty was left wondering what had happened to Ivan. In fact he had been stung by an insect in his helmet, I think. All together again we went along beside the river to the dock road and onto the coastal track where a group of travellers are making a terrible mess. We continued the usual route to Maryport and onto the Allonby cycle track. Dianne and Maurice were collecting points so kept on the track when the others used the road for the last stretch into Allonby. We met Peter in Allonby who had had a ride in the area. So 9 of us sat down to lunch though it wasn’t long before Sue and Paul joined us making 11. The conversation ranged widely as usual from setting up a Solway WhatsApp group to keeping a bucket by the back door to collect rainwater for flushing the downstairs loo, we pensioners need all the tips for economical living we can get.
After lunch the group split, Dianne, Ivan and Janet headed back to Cockermouth using the straighter inland route via Gilcrux, Tallentire and Bridekirk while the others headed back to Maryport, Flimby and then turned inland near Siddick to join the cycleway at Seaton. Unfortunately for John Rowell a snapped brake cable made him continue back on the outward route as he didn’t fancy going down the hill into Camerton. The others crossed the river at Camerton to do the horrible climb into Great Clifton with Maurice in a lot of pain by this time, his only consolation the Allonby cafe scones he had stashed in his bag.
Sunday 27th October Annual Prize Giving Dinner.
Again Hundith Hill was the venue attended by twenty six members and friends,
Six of them coming over from the North East, Noel and Harry having cycled over on Saturday from Hexham via Hartside.
The downhill was again run on the Dean Cross course down towards Ullock with five members taking part.
Sue our social secretary made her entry by wheelchair having broken her pelvis after a fall in Mallorca.
Shirley and Tracy did their usual stint selling raffle tickets to help swell the club funds.
Maurice the club chairman read out the prize winners and the trophies and medals were handed out by Dianne just back from France.

Wednesday 23rd October 2019 – Craggs Cafe, Bothel by Steve Lunt
“Schools Out”
Much chatter and debate in the Brewers Fayre over coffee and tea and to finally decide on a ride out to the Craggs Cafe on the Bothel road. Maggie kindly made the booking for Stewart, Maggie, Maurice, John R, Tom, Roy, Steve L and Granddaughter Romy.
Setting off through the usual Cockermouth lanes to reach the school and turning north towards and onto the Isel Road. At the Isel Bridge turn we took a left and down at the bridge greeted a solitary Swan on the river (unusual?). Exiting the bridge an immediate sharp right turn uphill passing the impressive brick house which stands there. Onwards passing Iselgate; then a right and left to Glebe Farm where the left turn took them to Sunderland and a “nifty” right turn at the outskirts of Sunderland took them up a long climb to the A591 Bothel Road with just a “stones” throw (½ a mile?) to the Craggs Cafe.
After lunch departure and for those on bikes a long downhill swoop to Castle in and onto Embleton and lastly for the “Westerners” the final stretch to Brewers Fayre
A great day out. (28miles?)
Sunday 20th October 2019 – Stag Inn, Crosby Club Run by Roy Jackson
On a cold, overcast, but dry morning Maggie, Tom, John R, Clive and Roy left Brewers Fayre, Cockermouth at about 10:15am led by John R. First to Broughton, then Dearham. to Maryport. Riding along the Promenade the view of the Galloway hills was very clear, the tip of the Mull of Galloway could just been seen, all very picturesque. Then past the Golf Club and along the cycle track, turning right to Crosscanonbie and up the hill to Crosby and the Stag Inn where Tracy and Bacca were sitting already there.
After a good lunch the group rode along the main road to Crosby Villa, turning right to Bullgill, then Tallentire and back to Brewers Fayre.
Wednesday 16th October 2019 , Craggs Cafe, Bothel by John Rowell
Clive and John R met at Brewers Fayre, Cockermouth 10am. They waited in their car for 10 minutes for rain to stop. They decided to ride to the Craggs, Bothel through Cockermouth via the Greenway and the the housing estate and onto the Isel Road, stopping to look at *Hewthwaite Hall* (1581). The owners invited them in to take a close look at the very ornate stone plaque above the front door and gave them a brief history of the house. They then cycled over the Isel Bridge turning right towards Sunderland, past Threapland Moss to join the A591 to the Craggs.
After tea and a good crack they left the cafe turning left to the Castle Inn, Ouse Bridge, Embleton, and over Slate Fell, to go through Cockermouth housing estate and retracing their wheels to Lamplugh Road and then to Brewers Fayre. - All done on a dry day.

Sunday 6th October 2019 – Cups and Saucers, Abbey Town by Maurice Cowley
On a overcast day threatening rain John R and Maurice met at Allonby.
The venue for that day was to be the Allonby Cafe and if open when they arrived to start the run they would have managed to have refreshment before they started their bike ride. Unfortunately it was shut until the 12th October. Plan “B” was to find another venue for dinner!!!
The ride started by riding north up the B5300 to turn right up to Edderside ( muddy as ever) and then to turn right again to New Cowper. At the bottom of the hill a left turn and then a right to go along the flat route to arrive at Abbey Town. In Abbey Town the roads to reach the Cups and saucers were taken and when John mentioned that it would be shut for the winter at the end of the month it was decided to stop there for lunch.
After Maurice had his obligatory scone and John had his soup and both had finished there tea and the chat had run it's course the pair left to reach the B5302 and the loop round Skinburness and then use the promenade to miss out some of the cobblestone while riding through Silloth. At Blitterlees the B5301 was taken to reach Tarns and then turned on to Mawbray and Salta and then back onto the B5300 to reach their cars at Allonby
Wednesday 2nd October Buttermere

After the usual tea and coffee the group headed into Cockermouth to join the greenway to Strawberry How.
A brief glance at Dianne's art work before negotiated the new housing development leading to the road over the A66.
It was then on to Hundith crossroads where they turned left to Lorton and onto Hope Beck where Maurice decided to turn back due to a painful knee.
The steady climb up to Lanthwaite Green so the group split only to regroup at the cattle grip, this was followed by the welcome descent to Rannerdale.
After the previous wet day there was plenty of standing water as they made their way along Crummock and onto Buttermere for lunch.
The usual cafe was closed due to being refurbished, so it was up the hill to the farm cafe that was doing a roaring trade.
Lunch and chat over and the group set of back to Cockermouth, somehow the group split up before reaching Rannerdale only to regroup at the cattle grip.
Roy decided to carry on, who was not to be seen again, the rest made their way to Lorton where they turned left over the river to Rodgerscale.
From Rodgerscale they took the lane by Sandy Beck towards Brandlingill to eventually join the main road at Paddle School back to parked vehicle at the Brewers Fayre.
