Autumn Tints Wednesday 25th October.
On a dry cool morning with a brisk westerly wind four members met at Summegrove, they were Maurice, Roy, Sue and John.
After a welcome cuppa the group left with Maurice setting a steady pace towards Egremont on wet roads strewn with leaves.
Still following Maurice, who guided the group along a narrow section of cycle track that had Sue dismounting, to eventually end up on the Main Street in Egremont.
It was then onto Thornhill where the group crossed the A595 onto a muddy lane that took them through Carleton to join the road to Hailea brief stop in Haile to remove some clothing, before negotiating the lane to Calder Bridge, covered in water in places, running off the fields.
Joining the A595 at Calder Bridge the group took the first left towards Sellafield, having deciding to take the shorter route to Beckermet,at Braystones the group met Sue and Paul coming in the opposite direction, they joined them back to Singletons for lunch, to meet up with Dave.
After lunch the group made their way back to Egremont where the group split up, Dave off to see Steve and his new shed.
Maurice back home to Thornhill, while the rest took the fell road to Wath Brow, where the group split again in Cleator Moor.
Sue and Paul taking the cycle path back to Moor Row and Egremont, the rest continued along the main road to Keekle and parked cars at Summergrove.
Sunday 22nd October Club Run Allonby Tea Rooms by Steve Lunt
The run was from the Melbreak Hotel, Chapel Brow to the Allonby Tea Rooms and even though there was the back end effects of storm Brian there was still 4 riders: Roy, John R, Tom and Steve L intent on making a start on a very windy but dry conditions.
The route was the usual standard one from the Melbreak, via Great Clifton village on the old A66 towards Workington, over the River Derwent, along the cycle path that eventually took them past the Siddick Wetlands to take the coastal path to Maryport and through the Marina and Harbour to leave Maryport along the Promenade and Golf Course and to reach Allonby using the Maryport/Allonby cycle path to the Allonby Tea Rooms and lunch and a welcome break.
The way home was the reverse route except the 4 riders agreed to take to the main road through Flimby rather than the usual circuitous cycle path with at least three gates. They should have known by now having traveled that way numerous times – due to heavy traffic and regular deep kerbside grids – this direct stretch is a no-no for sensible cyclists: we all live and learn!
Weather wise the return wasn't as bad as feared – the wind was side on and they enjoyed some shelter behind hedges and trees etc, and stayed dry.
Sunday 8th October Fox and Hounds Inn, Ennerdale Bridge by Maurice Cowley
Due to most of the Solway riders doing their cycling this day in Majorca only 4 members met up for lunch at the Fox and Hounds, Ennerdale Bridge. They were Maurice, Joe and Frances and Dave Swift. Joe and Frances had arrived by car.
Maurice had parked his car at the Fox and Hounds and rode up the track to Black Sail Hostel and back. On the way passing a couple on a tandem who were just finishing mending a puncture. At the Hostel they met up again and told Maurice that they were going to park the tandem there and walk a route up Black Sail Pass over Kirk Fell and then over Great Gable and Green Gable to return for their tandem by dropping down the Tongue back to the Hostel. That put Maurice's ride into the little perspective.
Dave had ridden from his home in Whitehaven, up through Hensingham and Moor Row and Cleator to drop down to Wath Bridge to get to the Fox and Hounds at Ennerdale.
Autumn Tints 4th October Royal Yew, Dean by Steve Lunt
The days ride was from Brewers Fayre (The old Sheep Centre) to the lunch venue at The Royal Yew, Dean.
Meeting up to ride were Tom (on a non powered hybrid Trek hybrid bike), Dianne, Anita, and Steve L, and Maurice who had 2 dogs to walk. Despite the weather forecast this was only to be a short run for the bikes.
Setting off up hill from the Premier Inn towards Paddle School, left turn then a right turn to Brandlingill – all against the wind and slight rain, Aikbank Hill and Pardshaw Hall then Pardshaw Village to then cross the A5086 Egremont/Cockermouth road with less than a mile to Dean and the Royal Yew and Shelter!
At lunch – Maurice met up with us, then Paul and Sue C, then John and Sue M, sensibly by car, and also John Moyes, back from the golf driving range.
Having enjoyed the lunch time fayre – always good “nosh” at the Yew – we all departed in various directions; the cyclists this time in a direction that was truly wind assisted. This shorter, more direct ride back to Brewers Fayre took them to Deanscale initially then Eaglesfield and down to Paddle School Junction to turn left towards Cockermouth and then to the Premier Inn car park.
Basically a wet day but the riders were glad to have turned out in spite of nearly abandoning the idea at 10:00am as crazy.
